Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about studying with CardForge.
What is Spaced Repetition (SRS)?
Spaced Repetition is a learning technique that schedules card reviews at increasing intervals based on how well you recall each answer. CardForge uses the SM-2 algorithm: cards you rate "Easy" are shown again in days or weeks, while cards you rate "Again" are repeated sooner. Over time this approach dramatically reduces study time while maximising long-term retention.
How does Today's Review work?
Today's Review aggregates due cards from all your active decks into a single study session. On the dashboard you'll see a counter showing how many cards are due today across every deck that has the "Activated for Study" toggle enabled. Click "Start Review" to begin — the session draws from all active decks at once so you never have to open each deck individually.
How does the "Activated for Study" toggle work?
Each deck has an "Activated for Study" switch in its settings. When this toggle is on, the deck's due cards are included in the global Today's Review queue on your dashboard. When it is off, the deck is excluded from the daily queue entirely — useful for decks you want to pause or study only on demand. You can still open the deck directly and study it at any time regardless of this setting.
Why is Merge Decks useful?
Merge Decks lets you combine two or more decks into one. This is handy when you have overlapping topics across separate decks and want to consolidate them for a unified study session. Crucially, all SRS progress (intervals, ease factors, and review history) for every card is preserved during the merge — you don't lose any of your learning history.
What flashcard types are supported?
We support three types: Basic (standard Q&A), Cloze (fill-in-the-blank using {{c1::answer}} syntax), and Multichoice (multiple choice questions). You can choose and edit these types when creating or editing your cards.
What is the difference between Spaced Repetition and Quiz mode?
These two modes work differently under the hood. Spaced Repetition (SRS) gives you four rating buttons — Again, Hard, Good, Easy — and uses the SM-2 algorithm to calculate the next optimal review date for each card. Your progress is saved and the app builds a long-term review schedule for you. Quiz mode gives you two buttons — Incorrect and Correct — and is a pure self-test: no review schedule is created or updated, so your SRS progress is not affected. Use SRS when you want to build lasting memory; use Quiz for quick warm-up or last-minute testing.
